'I Want to Surprise You and Me': A display, discussion and slideshow presentation of the artwork of Walter Gurbo

January 14, 2023Walter Gurbo is an artist who uses many forms of expression. Primarily a painter but also for many years a well known illustrator with the Village Voice, NY Times, Playboy, Psychology Today, MS, Esquire and many other publications.
At the same time exhibiting in galleries in N.Y.C.,Japan, Puerto Rico and upstate NY. Gurbo, a graduate of the High School of Art and Design in NYC and Pratt Institute. He then went on to teach at The school of Visual Arts. His sculptures and videos have also been exhibited widely.Now a proud resident of Philmont NY in his beautiful new studio he is producing one new series after another.The show at the Philmont Library will include some old and some very new. It will give a glimpse of the variety and range of this very prolific artist.Come and see. -

January 18, 2023Are you interested in your family history beyond dates, delving into historical documents to discover relationships and who your relatives were?
Holly MacCammon, professional genealogist provides an overview of the basics of genealogical research. The first session is a good starting point for those who are new to researching family history or for those who have a bit of experience, but would like to learn more. Topics in the initial session to be covered will include:
- The first steps to take before beginning your research
- The best records to look for to advance your research
- Where to find records, both online and in repositories
Genealogy Basics will be a 2-part program. To attend the second presentation, you must have attended the first zoom class. The second session will be in-person, more free-form, and informal. It will address submitted questions based upon the progress of each person’s research and Holly’s will answer questions. Limited attendance. If the weather is bad for traveling it is possible that the meeting will be held via Zoom.
Holly MacCammon is a professional genealogist and archivist. She has a master’s degree in Library Science from St. John's University in Queens and a Professional Learning Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University. Her professional and lineage memberships include the Association of Professional Genealogists, the New England Historic Genealogical Society, the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society and the Daughters of theAmerican Revolution. Holly lives in Claverack and has ancestral ties to Columbia County, the Hudson Valley and the Adirondack region dating back to the early 19th century. She also has a number of branches of Colonial-Era New England ancestors.

January 24, 2023Figure skating has changed dramatically in the last 100 years. The clothes, skates, ice surfaces and various moves have become more aerobic than 100 years ago. Figure skating was very popular among the wealthy women of the Gilded Age. Maria Reynolds, curator at Staatsburg Skate Park an avid skater, will talk about the history of competitive skating, early indoor ice rinks, fashion and maneuvers.
